Johnny\u2019s talent and love for music was instilled in him at an early age by his father, Clem Mathis and he proved to be most eager! He sang in the church choir, school functions, community events, amateur shows, and for visitors in their home.<\/p>\n

Not only a star athletic in school, his discovery by George Avakian, Columbia Records, prompted the now famous telegram to the record company: \u201cHave found phenomenal 19 year old boy who could go all the way! Send blank contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Known for \u201cWonderful, Wonderful\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s Not For Me To Say\u201d \u2013 Johnny\u2019s career reached a peak on the BILLBOARD pop chart in 1957 and was followed by his first #1 hit \u201cChances Are\u201d. Johnny\u2019s \u201cGreatest Hits\u201d became one of the most popular albums of all time and spent an unprecedented 490 continuous weeks (almost ten years) on the BILLBOARD Top Albums Chart. This record has been noted in THE GUINESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS.<\/p>\n
