College of the Ozarks Features “Can we be good with out God?” with Dr Paul Chamberlain
By: Matt Farmer

Dr. Paul Chamberlain will present “Can We Be Good Without God” at College of the Ozarks on November 7, at 7 p.m., in Jones Auditorium.

Chamberlain serves as Associate Professor of Apologetics and Philosophy at Trinity Western University and Director of Institute of Christian Apologetics. He has published five books concerning ethics, morality and the Christian faith, including Why People Don’t Believe: Confronting Seven Challenges to Christian Faith and Can We Be Good without God?: A Conversation about Truth, Morality, Culture and a Few Other Things that Matter.

Chamberlain’s book, Can We Be Good without God?, has been used as one of the texts for the College of the Ozarks’ Christian world-view classes.

“Anyone who believes that objective moral good exists must provide some explanation for its existence,” says Professor of Philosophy and Religion Dr. Mark Rapinchuk, “In Can We Be Good without God?, Paul Chamberlain demonstrates that explanations that ignore or eliminate God simply do not work. I am excited that Dr. Chamberlain will be here to discuss this important topic and expect our students to be encouraged and challenged by his presentation.”

Students will receive priority seating for the event; remaining seats will be available to the public free of charge. For more information, please contact Christian Ministries at 417-690-3446.

Several Veterans Events Planned During Veterans Week At College of the Ozarks
By: Matt Farmer

During Veterans week, College of the Ozarks will honor American veterans with the dedication of Veterans Grove Plaza, special guest speakers, and other events November 9-11.

The Veterans Grove Plaza is an expansion of the Veterans Grove. It will display flags representing each branch of the military, as well as the American Flag.

Veterans Grove honors World War II veterans who have participated in Patriotic Travel with College of the Ozarks students. Each Veteran is honored with the planting of a Sugar Maple, which is aligned with others to create the same unique pattern of the marble crosses at the American cemeteries in Europe. Next to each Sugar Maple is a bronze marker with a Veteran’s name.

The events begin Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 9:30 a.m., with a Special Forces A-Team lecture and display at The Keeter Center’s Royal Oak Forum.

On Thursday Nov. 10, at 9:30 a.m., Pearl Harbor witness and survivor Dorinda Nicholson will speak about her memories of the attack. A World War II mini-reunion begins at 4 p.m. Both the lecture with Dorinda Nicholson and mini-reunion will take place in the Royal Oak Forum. At 6 p.m., College of the Ozarks will dedicate the Veterans Grove Plaza on the Alumni Center lawn.

The events conclude Friday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. in the Royal Oak Forum with presentations from Paramount’s Vice President of Productions Stratton Leopold, New York Times best-selling author David Perlmutt and Charlie “Two Shoes” Tsui from the true story Charlie Two-Shoes and The Marines Of Love Company.

All the events are free and open to the public. For more information, please call the Public Relations office at (417) 690-2212.

CBS Moneywatch.com Ranks College Of Ozarks As One of “Top 25 College With The Best Professors”

By: Chelsea Kliethermes and Matt Farmer

This week, CBS MoneyWatch.com released the top “25 Colleges with the Best Professors in 2011” based off of Forbes magazine’s 2011 college rankings. College of the Ozarks ranked #15 out of 650 superior schools for outstanding professors.

According to the CBS MoneyWatch.com article written by Lynn O’Shaughnessy, “None of the Ivy League schools, for instance, crack the list of the top 25 schools with the best professors. Princeton came the closest at 57th best.”

Forbes determines the rankings through information provided by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, which uses RateMyProfessors.com to assess the quality of teaching at schools. The website asks students to evaluate their professors in three categories: easiness, helpfulness and clarity. Forbes also uses schools’ freshmen retention rate, graduation rate, student debt levels, graduates’ salaries and more.

“College of the Ozarks has always focused on effective teaching, but it’s great to be recognized for what we do,” says Professor of Education Dana McMahon.

Eager parents of seniors and aspiring college scholars dash to the local bookstores and scan online to see which schools top the list, and Forbes is acclaimed for its “top” lists.

Terry Bowen, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Kerusso, will serve as the panel moderator.

COSIFE will welcome SIFE teams from Crowder College, Ozarks Technical Community College, Evangel University and Southwest Baptist University to attend “Prelude to EntreLeadership,” which will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 3-4:15 p.m. in The Keeter Center’s Royal Oak Forum. The public also is invited to attend this free event; tickets are not required.

“Prelude to EntreLeadership” will serve as a pre-event to the October 4, Community Convocation “EntreLeadership” featuring Christian financial advisor/author Mr. Dave Ramsey. COSIFE has taken a leadership role in promoting financial stewardship and leadership education.

“COSIFE is providing financial literacy to students to help them obtain the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions regarding money matters,” said COSIFE Advisor Rachel Mullinax.

Beginning last year, the COSIFE helped launch a financial stewardship course for College of the Ozarks students. Mr. Ramsey designed the college curriculum and C of O Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice David Vogt and his wife Abbey teach the course on campus. Through the generosity and support of Christian Healthcare Ministries, a total of 250 C of O students will have taken this Dave Ramsey college curriculum course by the semester’s end.

“The Vogts and COSIFE are dedicated to providing these courses because students today have a real hunger for financial education,” said Mullinax.

For more information on “Prelude to EntreLeadership,” please contact COSIFE at (417) 690-2291.

“Dies Vivendum Est” On Display At Boger Gallery

By: Austin Plummer

The Boger Gallery at College of the Ozarks currently is displaying the exhibition “dies vivendum est.” The exhibit runs through October 11 in the Boger Gallery, located on the ground floor of the Jones Learning Center.

“Dies vivendum est” is an exhibit of the Racela collection of 19th century photography, which ranges primarily from the 1840s to the 1880s. This collection is made up of many forms of early photography including daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes, along with paper albumen prints.

Some of the most powerful photographs in the collection are those from the Civil War. These incredible photographs give us a small view into the lives of the people during this difficult time. Every photograph in the collection is unique and has its own story to tell.

This Boger Gallery event is sponsored by the College of the Ozarks Art Department, and financial assistance is provided by the Missouri Arts Council. Boger Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and 1-5 p.m. weekends. For more information contact Richard Cummings, Boger Gallery Director, at 417-690-2268 or e-mail [email protected].

Ex-Communist Dr. Marvin Olasky To Speak At Jones Auditorium

By: Matt Farmer

Students at College of the Ozarks will have the opportunity to hear the story of ex-communist Dr. Marvin Olasky on September 27, at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium.

Olasky is the editor-in-chief of “WORLD” magazine and author of more than 20 books, including The Tragedy of American Compassion. President George W. Bush has called him “compassionate conservatism’s leading thinker.” He is a widely-recognized conservative pundit, journalist and historian.

Born in Boston to a Jewish family, Olasky became an atheist and Marxist when he entered high school. He then joined the Communist Party in 1972. His beliefs made a complete reversal after a spiritual awakening at the University of Michigan when he read the New Testament in Russian. Olasky became a passionate supporter of the Christian Conservative movement. In 1992, he helped found the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas.

Olasky was provost of The King’s College in New York City from 2007 to 2011, prior to which he was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin journalism department from 2003-2007. He joined “WORLD” magazine in 1990 and became its editor-in-chief in 2001. He recently has been appointed as Professor of Journalism, and the inaugural holder of Patrick Henry College’s Distinguished Chair in Journalism and Public Policy.

In 1995, Olasky became an occasional advisor to Texas gubernatorial candidate George W. Bush. Bush made faith-based programs a major component of his 2000 presidential campaign, and Olasky’s academic work helped form the basis for Bush’s “compassionate conservatism.”

Students will receive priority seating for the event; remaining seats will be available to the public free of charge. For more information, please contact Christian Ministries at 417-690-3446.
