ADAPT

Tuesday, May 5th, 2015

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) coalition held four After Prom events for Taney County High School students. This is the seventh year the ADAPT and IMAX Entertainment Complex have sponsored an option for students to attend a safe, alcohol and drug free, event following prom. Students received a ticket for admission to a free movie at the IMAX Entertainment Complex, snack, and drink. A total of over 460 students attended this year’s events. ADAPT is grateful to volunteers and the IMAX Entertainment Complex for helping to make this a fun and successful event for the students.

In addition to the After Prom events, as part of their ongoing spring underage drinking awareness campaign, ADAPT is also implementing a “sticker shock” campaign. Coalition volunteers have placed bright green stickers on packages of alcohol available for purchase in local retail establishments. The stickers serve as a reminder to people, especially during prom and graduation season, that it is illegal to purchase alcohol for anyone under the age of 21. A first offense can result in up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $500. ADAPT wants to remind everyone to enjoy this season of celebration but that it is also an opportunity to speak with your children about alcohol and drugs and set clear expectations. Kids who talk to their parents about these issues are fifty percent less likely to use alcohol or drugs.

ADAPT is also hosting a prescription drug take-back event on May 9th from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the CVS Pharmacy in Branson. Please join us in this opportunity to spring clean your medicine cabinet and safely dispose of any unwanted or expired medications that you have in your home. This is an effort that the community can make to help keep medications out of the hands of children and those that would potentially abuse these medications. ADAPT is a community coalition focused on youth substance abuse prevention. For more information, contact Casey Parnell, ADAPT Project Coordinator, at 417-334-4544 ext. 232 or [email protected].
